Ensure Safety With Playtec Play Equipment

Playground safety is not a one-time consideration. It is an ongoing responsibility.

When children use play equipment in your venue, you are responsible for ensuring the environment remains safe over time. Equipment wears, components loosen and usage patterns change. Without regular inspection and maintenance, risks develop.

At Playtec, safety compliance is treated as a continuous process. At Playtec, safety compliance is not a box-ticking exercise. It is a core commitment that runs through every aspect of what we do.

Australian Standard AS 4685

AS 4685 is the primary standard governing playground equipment and surfacing in Australia. It covers the full lifecycle of a playground, including design, installation, inspection and maintenance.

The standard addresses key safety areas such as:

  • Structural integrity and load-bearing requirements
  • Entrapment and entanglement hazard prevention
  • Fall zones and impact-attenuating surfaces
  • Age-appropriate design and accessibility considerations
  • Maximum fall heights

All Playtec playgrounds are designed and installed in accordance with AS 4685.

Safety Beyond the Standard

Meeting AS 4685 does not automatically guarantee a playground is safe in a live commercial environment.

Playgrounds are not used in controlled conditions. They are used by children of different ages, in high volumes and often in ways that were not originally intended. Playtec’s approach is to assess how the equipment will actually be used, not just how it was designed.

This includes:

  • How different age groups interact with the same structure
  • What happens during peak usage periods
  • How supervision varies across different venues
  • How wear and deterioration impact safety over time

This thinking is applied at design, confirmed at installation and reassessed during every inspection.

Impact Testing & Surface Compliance

Falls are one of the primary risks in any playground environment. For this reason, fall-zone surfaces must be tested to ensure they provide adequate impact attenuation. In simple terms, they must absorb the energy of a fall and reduce the likelihood of serious injury.

Playtec specifies flooring systems that are independently tested to meet AS 4685 requirements.Where required, we can also arrange independent impact testing of installed surfaces. This provides documented proof of compliance, which can be critical in the event of an incident or insurance claim.

Routine Safety Inspections

Regular inspections are essential to maintaining playground safety. Over time, components experience wear, fasteners loosen, surfaces degrade, and new hazards can emerge that were not present at installation. Playtec offers:

Operational Inspections (Daily/Weekly)

We provide guidance and checklists for your venue staff to conduct regular visual inspections before the playground is opened to the public. These inspections check for obvious hazards such as broken components, sharp edges, missing parts, or surface damage.

Routine Maintenance Inspections (Monthly/Quarterly)

More detailed inspections carried out by a trained Playtec technician. These cover mechanical fastenings, structural integrity, surface wear, and compliance with original design specifications. Findings are documented with written reports.

Annual Compliance Inspections

A comprehensive annual inspection carried out to the full requirements of AS 4685. The inspection produces a formal compliance report that venue operators can retain for their records and provide to insurers, regulators, or management as required.

A compliant playground at installation will not remain compliant without ongoing inspection.

Over time:

  • Fasteners loosen
  • Surfaces wear
  • Components degrade
  • New hazards emerge

Regular inspections are essential to identify these issues early and address them before they become safety risks. Playtec offers a structured inspection approach:

Why Inspections Matter for Venue Operators

Safety is the primary concern, but inspections also play an important role in protecting your business.

Regular, documented inspections provide:

  • Evidence of duty of care in the event of an incident
  • Support for insurance claims and liability protection
  • Compliance with council or licensing requirements
  • Early identification of wear, reducing long-term repair costs
  • Increased confidence for parents and customers

In a commercial environment, this level of documentation is not optional. It is part of responsible venue operation.

Maintenance & Spare Parts

When an issue is identified, it needs to be resolved quickly and correctly. Because Playtec manufactures its playgrounds in-house, we can supply replacement parts to the original specification. This avoids the delays and inconsistencies often associated with imported equipment.

Fast access to the correct components ensures repairs are completed efficiently and the playground can remain in use with minimal disruption.

Booking a Safety Inspection

Playtec provides inspection services not only for our own installations, but also for playgrounds supplied by other manufacturers.

If you are unsure whether your current equipment meets compliance requirements, an inspection will provide a clear assessment of its condition and any actions required.
